Good Practice Guide for Construction and Demolition
All construction sites must have a construction and demolition plan before work begins. Find more information on what should be included.
Plans must reference the requirements of the Good Practice Guide for Construction and Demolition, which was developed by the Air Quality Monitoring and Noise Control Unit.
This best practice guidance has been created to ensure that demolition and construction work does not have an adverse impact on those living and working nearby.
It sets out what developers should consider and provides recommendations for the control of noise, vibration and air pollution. A risk based approach is used, taking into account the area, the nature of the work and the duration of the work.
The guide provides guidance on:
- Mapping sensitivity to noise in the local area
- General considerations
- Plant and equipment
- Vehicle activity
- Demolition Phase
- Ground Works and Piling Phase
- Monitoring
- Extensions of Working Hours
Complaints and Notices
If a complaint is received, the Council may demand additional control measures. We can take action to prevent or limit noise by serving notices. A notice requires the person in charge to follow instructions set out in the notice to prevent or limit noise.
Consequences of Non Compliance
Failure to comply with air quality and noise regulations can lead to severe consequences, ranging from immediate stop-work orders to hefty fines and legal prosecution.
