Gardening Great Courses

With spring finally here, our thoughts will be returning to the garden. It's probably more important than ever now that we find ourselves indoors a lot of the time. For some new ideas, why not try three online courses from our online learning resource The Great Courses Plus - all free with your library membership.

How to Grow Anything - Your Best Garden and Landscape in 6 Lessons by Professor Melinda Myers. Consisting of six 30 minute videos, it takes you through a full growing season, helping you plan the garden of your dreams. It includes tips on soil testing, picking the right topsoil, garden maintenance and small urban gardens.

You can also do the 12- lesson course by the same tutor called How to Grow Trees & Shrubs. This gives you practical tips on shopping for, planting and caring for trees and shrubs to create the perfect foliage for your environment. It includes tricks the experts use to help plants take root and to keep them healthy and beautiful all year round.

Finally, if you want to take things further you can try The Science of Gardening by Professor Lucy Chalker-Scott in twenty-four half hour lessons. Gardening is mostly a received knowledge handed down. Here, we learn the science behind it and weed out the myths, enabling us to make informed decisions on topics such as site and soil analysis, plant selection, soil preparation, plant nutrition, pruning and pest management. Each course contains a Guidebook consisting of a PDF of the main points of each lesson of the course.
