Meath Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme

Construction works on Meath Street began on 16 February 2026. This major upgrade will enhance the streetscape of one of Dublin 8’s most historic and vibrant retail areas.

Together with Thomas Street and Francis Street, Meath Street forms the main commercial centre of The Liberties. It thrived as a market street for much of the 20th century, offering groceries, general provisions, covered markets and clothing. Like adjoining streets, Meath Street is largely retail at street level with residential accommodation above.

The Meath Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme supports the ongoing commercial rejuvenation of this historic market street. Physical and environmental improvements will be made to Meath Street and surrounding areas.

The scheme will improve pedestrian facilities on the street and rebalance space to stimulate new commercial uses and activities.

Public Realm Upgrades

This Public Realm Improvement Scheme will deliver a more attractive, accessible and pedestrian‑friendly Meath Street. Key features of the project include:

  • Widened footpaths to create additional space for pedestrians and on-street activity.
  • Planting of up to fifteen new street trees.
  • Upgraded public lighting to improve safety and ambiance..
  • New street furniture, including public seating.

Project Timeline

Dublin City Council has appointed Cairn Construction as the main contractor for these works. Construction will be carried out in 13 phases over approximately 20 months. Works will begin with the eastern footpath between The Coombe and Carmen’s Hall and progress northwards along Meath Street.

Cairn Construction will be responsible for maintaining regular communication with residents, businesses and stakeholders throughout the duration of the works. It will provide timely updates and minimise disruption.

Dublin City Council thanks the local community for its cooperation and patience as we work to deliver a renewed and improved Meath Street for all who live, work and visit the area.
