Dublin has a rich sporting heritage, and sport forms an important part of the city’s social and cultural identity. Every sports club or organisation generates original records that reflect its activities and significance at local and national levels. These records are of immense value to researchers, club historians and communities.

About the Dublin City Sports Archive

The Dublin City Sports Archive (DCSA) was established in September 2010 by Dublin City Library and Archive to create a lasting legacy from Dublin’s term as European Capital of Sport. Collections received to date include hockey, golf, cycling, athletics, swimming, water‑polo, football supporters’ organisations and VEC sports.

Local clubs, organisations, community groups and individuals involved in sport are invited to contact the archive if they have material documenting Dublin’s sporting story. Email [email protected] or call 01 674 4848 / 01 674 4996.

Note: As the GAA, FAI and IRFU maintain their own archives, the DCSA does not accept donations from these bodies.

  • Records must be packed into boxes before transfer.
  • Files must be placed inside labelled file folders noting content and date range.

Electronic Records

For electronic files (emails, PDFs, digital photographs, etc.) contact the archive to agree a transfer method. External hard drives are preferred over CDs or DVDs.

Records Not to Transfer

The following items should not be transferred to the Dublin City Sports Archive:

  • Records required for the ongoing, day‑to‑day operation of the club.
  • Records still required for legal or statutory purposes.
  • Low‑level financial material such as chequebooks, bank statements, receipt books and invoices.
  • Membership renewal forms.
  • Duplicate material, including extra copies of publications and memorabilia.
  • Oversized items in large frames (recommended: create a digital copy and transfer digitally).
  • Records with extensive personal information that may require long‑term closure under data protection legislation — these must be reviewed by an archivist before transfer.

Copyright and Ownership

  • Ownership of records donated to the Dublin City Sports Archive passes to Dublin City Council and will remain in public ownership. Material will not be sold or gifted.
  • Dublin City Library and Archive will preserve and make the archives accessible in accordance with standard archival practice.
  • Intellectual copyright remains with the donor, club or association.
  • Under the Copyright and Related Rights Acts 2000, the archive may supply photocopies for research use only.
  • Researchers wishing to publish material must seek permission directly from the copyright holder.

Exhibition Use

Requests from clubs to borrow original archive items for exhibition will be considered only if the exhibition venue meets strict security and preservation standards. In most cases, the Archive will recommend providing digital surrogates instead of originals.

Cataloguing

After transfer, records must be catalogued before they can be made available to the public. There will be a time‑lag between receipt of a collection and its availability in the Reading Room.

Dublin City Library & Archive determines cataloguing priorities and schedules.

Access to Collections

Once catalogued, collections are made available to the public in the Reading Room, regardless of creation date.

However, records containing personal or sensitive information will be identified during cataloguing and closed for appropriate periods under data protection legislation.

Donors should notify the Archive of any concerns about sensitive material at the point of transfer.

It is not possible to restrict access to non‑sensitive material for extended periods.

Administrative history

The Maids of the Mountain Ladies’ Hockey Club was founded in 1918 by Hilda O’Reilly (1898–1962, later Martin). The club merged with Three Rock Rovers Men’s Hockey Club in 1999 to form Three Rock Ladies, after sharing facilities at the Rovers’ Grange Road, Rathfarnham complex since 1988.

The founders were “maids” (wives, girlfriends, sisters or daughters) of Three Rock Rovers players. The club name was inspired by the operetta Maid of the Mountains, staged in the Gaiety Theatre in August 1918.

The founders, including Hilda O’Reilly, were members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment during World War I and wished to counter what they saw as a “closed nature” of ladies’ hockey clubs at the time, which admitted only past pupils or employees of certain schools.

Team colours were originally a purple tunic with a mauve shirt, chosen to resemble heather on the mountains; lilac socks were added in 1959 and the tunic was replaced by a wrap skirt in the 1970s.

Club grounds and development

Maids first shared grounds with Three Rock Rovers at Foxrock. From 1934–1986 they participated in the Men’s Hockey Union Templeogue grounds and pavilion scheme. After the sale of those grounds (1985–1986), Maids hired alternative pitches until relocating to Grange Road in 1988.

The club was administered by a President, Vice-Presidents, Captain, Secretary, Treasurer, General Committee, Selection Committee, and additional committees such as social and fundraising groups. Officers were elected annually. Membership categories included full, schoolgirl, pavilion, honorary, associate, veteran and overseas.

Teams were organised across multiple levels: Senior A & B, Intermediate A & B, Junior A & B, Middle A & B, and Minor.

Maids were affiliated with the Leinster Ladies’ Hockey Union. Major achievements included winning the Irish Senior Cup, Leinster Senior Cup and Leinster Senior League in 1920, and the Irish Junior Cup in 1923. Thirty‑two Maids players represented Ireland internationally.

Touring history

The club toured extensively: regular annual appearances at the Llandudno festival (1955–1987), and international tours to Germany (1937, 1982, 1986), the Netherlands (late 1940s to 1983), USA (1981), Canada (1981, 1984), and Zimbabwe and South Africa (1997).

Archival history & acquisition

The papers were kept by club members until their transfer to Dublin City Council in Spring 2010. Much material was gathered by Hilary McDonagh and Orla McKeown while researching The Lilac Years.

Deposited by Hilary McDonagh and Orla McKeown for Three Rock Ladies Hockey Club in 2010.

Administrative & Biographical History

Rathfarnham Golf Club was founded in 1899 at Butterfield House, Rathfarnham. The original nine‑hole course covered 50 acres between Butterfield Avenue and the River Dodder. Sir Frederick Shaw served as the first President. By 1900 membership had already grown to 123 men and women.

A new clubhouse was built in 1903 and membership had risen to 230 by that year. In 1966, the Club moved from Butterfield to a new 9‑hole course at Newtown on Stocking Lane. The course expanded gradually to 14 holes (2002), 15 holes (2008) and 18 holes (2014).

Significant victories include the Barton Cup and Irish Times Shields in 1962, and the Leinster Mixed Foursomes Championship in 2012. The Club's sole international player to date is Harriet Celenia “Ena” Brooks (1921–2013), whose papers form part of the Sports Archive.

In 1999 the Club celebrated its centenary year with a programme of events including dinners, competitions, a gala ball and commemorative publications. A detailed centenary history was compiled by Dick Shiel and is held within sub‑fonds DCSA/008/17.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Following an appeal to members in 2012, many former club records were located and organised by club archivist Dr Susan Hood. These were permanently transferred to Dublin City Archives in July 2013.

Scope & Content

The collection documents over a century of administrative and sporting activity at Rathfarnham Golf Club. It includes minutes, correspondence, rules and bye‑laws, fixture lists, competition books, AGM reports, newsletters, financial records, c.1,000 photographs, and extensive records relating to course development and the centenary year (1999).

The archive provides valuable insights into the social history of sport in Ireland, local development in Rathfarnham, and the evolution of golf club management in the 20th century. It is also relevant to family historians researching former members.

Material donated to date include programs, publications, photographs, minute books, administrative records and financial records relating to over 130 years of Irish hockey history. Each series will be made accessible to the public once catalogued and in accordance with data protection requirements.

DCSA/016 Irish Hibernian Athletics Association

DCSA/022 The Irish Ramblers Club

The Irish Ramblers Club was founded in 1964 by a group of like-minded individuals who shared a passion and love for hiking and hillwalking. From the beginning their mission was “to enjoy, explore and protect our beautiful countryside”, and they have remained committed to this ever since. Throughout their history they have evolved and grown into a club through which as many as four thousand members have passed through and one that currently boasts more than 700 current members. The sporting activities of the Ramblers include six different hikes undertaken each Sunday. In addition to the sporting aspect of the club there is also a strong social element which is apparent through much of the collection. Incorporating the sporting with the social is commonplace.

This collection contains 12 boxes of records which relate to the establishment, administration, and sporting and social history of the Irish Ramblers Club since its foundation in 1964. It was formally donated to Dublin City Sports Archive in November 2017.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Irish Ramblers Club was founded in 1964 by a group of outdoor enthusiasts with a shared commitment to enjoying, exploring, and protecting the Irish countryside. The club grew rapidly, with an estimated 4,000 people having been members over its lifetime and more than 700 active members today.

The club’s sporting activities include six organised hikes every Sunday, while its strong social culture is reflected throughout the archival collection. The material illustrates both the recreational and community‑focused aspects of the organisation.

Archival History

Records were held by the Irish Ramblers Club until their transfer to Dublin City Council in January 2016. The transfer was facilitated by Jack Morrissey.

Scope & Content

This collection documents the administrative, sporting, and social history of the Irish Ramblers Club from its founding in 1964. It provides insight into the club’s governance, membership, financial activities, event planning, anniversaries, and its relationship with Mountaineering Ireland (formerly the Mountaineering Council of Ireland).

A major component of the archive is “The Rambler” — the club’s long‑running monthly magazine and bulletin — which reflects the club’s culture, activities, communications, and identity in a comprehensive manner.

2. “The Rambler” Magazine and Bulletin

This series contains the complete run of “The Rambler”, the monthly magazine and bulletin of the Irish Ramblers Club. As a long‑standing publication, The Rambler reflects:

  • The club’s hiking activities and routes
  • Reports from leaders and committees
  • Features written by members
  • Announcements, updates and club news
  • Social events and cultural life of the club
  • Editorial commentary and summaries of major milestones

Materials in this series may include:

  • Bulletins, circulars and newsletters issued between monthly editions
  • Editorial drafts and supporting correspondence
