Oxford Art Online gives access to an authoritative, inclusive, and easily searchable array of online art resources. Through a single gateway, library members can access and cross-search a number of acclaimed and regularly updated art reference works including The Grove Dictionary of Art and The Benezit Dictionary of Artists. In addition, this resource allows users to search a number of other art reference titles including The Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, The Oxford Companion to Western Art, and The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms.
The Grove Dictionary of Art is the definitive authority on all aspects of the visual arts, with 30,000 signed and peer-reviewed articles contributed by nearly 7,000 international scholars. Grove Art features entries on artists, architects, craftsmen, patrons, movements, locations, and periods, as well as bibliographies for further research, and thousands of searchable images made available through partnerships with museums, galleries, and other arts organisations. It is a living resource, with scholars and specialists from around the world continually reviewing and updating existing content and contributing new articles. In addition to the vast number of entries on the visual arts, it features a host of learning resources that organise the content for use in art and art history classrooms, making Grove Art an essential source for scholars and students alike.
Noted for its global scope and its excellent coverage of European artists, a distinguishing feature of The Benezit Dictionary of Artists is that it includes entries on obscure artists, historic auction records, and over 11,000 images of artists’ signatures, monograms, and stamps of sale. Under the supervision of specialist advisors, Benezit is continually updated to reflect new scholarship, with a special focus on contemporary artists with current or recent exhibitions. This resource is unique: its diverse coverage and detailed histories of artists’ works make it an essential resource for collectors, curators, professionals, and students – anyone needing authoritative information on individual artists and the collection, display, and sale of their works.
Featuring 800+ articles by distinguished scholars from many fields and countries, The Encyclopedia of Aesthetics is a comprehensive survey of major concepts, thinkers, and debates about the meaning, uses, and value of all the arts—from painting and sculpture to literature, music, theatre, dance, television, film, and popular culture. This edition of the Encyclopedia surveys the full breadth of critical thought on art, culture, and society – from classical philosophy to contemporary critical theory. It also includes increased coverage of international aesthetics, modern aesthetics, new media like computer art, and areas like neuroaesthetics that were not thoroughly covered in the previous edition.
The Oxford Companion to Western Art is written by over 100 art historians and specialists. It provides in-depth coverage of Western Art with entries on artists and their works, styles and movements, art forms and art terms, combined with more modern methodologies focussed on patronage, taste, theory, and criticism, and the scientific examination of materials and techniques. It includes critical appreciation and factual information on over 1700 artists from classical times to the 20th century, with 49 feature articles covering a broad spectrum of topics from art history and its methods to wall painting.
The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms is an accessible and useful A to Z covering a wide range of terms from the visual art world, including materials, techniques, and important styles and periods. In this new edition, the text has been fully revised and updated to reflect the latest developments in the field. It has also been expanded with more than 100 brand new entries, focussing primarily on modern and contemporary art materials and techniques. From abstract art to woodcuts, and the Baroque Revival to ziggurats, this highly readable dictionary is the ideal reference source for students of Art and all related subjects, for gallery visitors, and for all people interested in the visual arts.
