Our first conversation is with Daoirí Farrell whose episode of ‘Drawing from the Well’ explores the life and songs of Kathleen Behan (1889–1984). Best known as the mother of playwright Brendan Behan, and singer, song writer Dominic Behan, Kathleen Behan (née Kearney) came from a family rich in song, and the traditions of Dublin. She lived through the Easter Rising of 1916 and carried with her a vibrant spirit which she passed on to her children. The video ‘Kathleen Behan: Rebel at Heart’ is free to view on ITMA Facebook, YouTube, InstagramTV, and website.
This session is hosted by Liam O’Connor Director of ITMA and David O’Brien Librarian, Dublin City Libraries and was recorded on 5 May 2021.
Dublin singer and instrumentalist Daoirí Farrell has recorded three albums and toured extensively in Ireland and internationally. Winner of two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2017, he also received three nominations in the 2019 RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards.
