Winter Stories on TumbleBook
Published on 3rd December 2020
As we're heading into the winter months and colder weather is approaching, it's the perfect time to cosy up with a sweet story. To find these books just log into TumbleBook Library and search for the title.
Our first choice, Lewis Cardinal's First Winter, this follows a red cardinal as he sees his woodland friends preparing for winter for the first time. The combination of Amy Crane Johnson's simple dialogue and Robb Mommaerts' colourful illustrations serve as an introduction to migration and hibernation, as well as touching on themes of change and friendship. Suitable for ages 4-6.
Next is A Penguin Story, Edna the penguin is surrounded by three colours: white ice, black sky, blue sea. She knows there must be something else out there. But what? Author and illustrator Antoinette Portis marries simplistic, childlike design with deeper themes of curiosity, exploration and discovery. The humorous details and fun sound effects make this a great pick for children aged 3-5.
Winter is the Warmest Season by Lauren Stringer invites us to appreciate simple pleasures from wrapping up in snug winter woollies, to enjoying steaming hot cocoa in front of the fireplace. The delightfully poetic text encourages you to adjust your perspective while the vivid acrylic illustrations conjure up a homely atmosphere that is sure to charm you and your little ones.
Suitable for ages 3-5.
Our last TumbleBook pick is perfect for reading before a nature walk. Winter Trees teaches us how to identify seven common trees using both sight and touch. Leslie Evans' intricate lino print illustrations capture the different trees' distinct shapes and give us glimpses of the wildlife that interact with them. While packed with information, author Carole Gerber's simple rhymes make the text engaging for children aged 5-7.
