26 February 2025: Royal Canal Greenway Phase 3 – Upcoming Roadworks
Upcoming on-street roadworks for the project are as follows:
Clarke’s Bridge, Summerhill Parade/Ballybough Road
- As there was insufficient time to reset manhole covers during the resurfacing works on 16th February last, these will now be carried out on Thursday 27th February, between 10:00am and 4:00pm, under a traffic light switch off and a stop/go system (to facilitate crossing pedestrians). Although the works location will vary between the edges and the centre of the road, one lane of traffic will be maintained in both directions at all times.
- At the same time, necessary adjustments will be made to the road markings at Clarke’s Bridge.
Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower/Whitworth Road/Drumcondra Road Lower/Whitworth Place
- Kerb modification works to the central median on Dorset Street Lower were completed ahead of schedule and all traffic lanes have reopened. Footpath repaving works on Dorset Street Lower and Drumcondra Road Lower are ongoing.
- Night works to complete road resurfacing at this location are currently scheduled to take place on the night of either Monday 3rd or Tuesday 4th March, between 7:30pm and 6:00am, under a traffic light switch off and stop/go system at Dorset Street Lower’s junctions with Belvidere Road/Innisfallen Parade and Drumcondra Road Lower/Whitworth Road/Whitworth Place. There will be two-way traffic (one lane in each direction) on the outbound side of Dorset Street Lower between Whitworth Road and Belvidere Road during these times. Confirmation of the precise date for the resurfacing works will be provided in the coming days.

Road surface repairs on Prospect Road and Whitworth Road are now scheduled to take place at night later in March, under a traffic light switch off and a stop/go system at the junction of Prospect Road, Whitworth Road and Phibsborough Road. Further information will be provided closer to the time
Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by these works.
11 February 2025: Royal Canal Greenway Phase 3 – Upcoming Roadworks and Canal Towpath Closure
Following on from the last update on 3rd January, upcoming on-street roadworks for the project are as follows:
Clarke’s Bridge, Summerhill Parade/Ballybough Road
- Roadworks at Clarke’s Bridge have made good progress over the past three weeks and are now nearing completion. Roadway resurfacing, road marking and manhole cover resetting are scheduled to be carried out during the daytime this Sunday 16th February, between 9am and 8pm, under a traffic light switch off and a stop/go system. This is in order to complete all of these works in one shift; they would take two shifts to complete at night.
- In advance of the resurfacing works, the pedestrian crossing signals will be relocated from the crest of the bridge to the new position at the canal towpath.
Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower/Whitworth Road/Drumcondra Road Lower/Whitworth Place
- Kerb modification works to the central median on Dorset Street Lower are due to commence at 10am on Monday 17th February and will take approximately two weeks to complete. The inbound traffic lane nearest the median will be closed for the entire period, which is expected to cause delays to inbound traffic, particularly during the morning peak. Works to the median will take place between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. During this period, the outbound traffic lane nearest the median will also be closed in order to provide sufficient working space for the works contractor. Outside of these hours, all outbound lanes will be open to traffic.
- Night works to complete road resurfacing at this location are currently scheduled to take place on the nights of Monday 3rd, Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th March, between 7:30pm and 6:00am each night, under a traffic light switch off and a stop/go system at the junction of Dorset Street Lower, Belvidere Road and Innisfallen Parade. There will be two-way traffic on the outbound side of Dorset Street Lower between Whitworth Road and Belvidere Road during these times. Further information will be provided closer to the time.
- Outstanding footpath repaving works on Dorset Street Lower and Drumcondra Road Lower are scheduled to take place during the second half of February. These works are only expected to cause disruption at the corner of Binns Bridge and Whitworth Road, where footpath width is limited; this corner will have to be tightened for vehicles while the new footpath is being laid.
- The toucan crossing is currently planned to be commissioned on Sunday 23rd March 2025. This will require a traffic light switch off and a stop/go system will be in place at the Dorset Street Lower/Drumcondra Road Lower/Whitworth Road/Whitworth Place junction. Further information will be provided closer to the time.
Cross Guns Bridge, Phibsborough Road/Prospect Road/Whitworth Road
- Minor footpath snagging works are scheduled to be completed during daytime hours in the second half of February. Road surface repairs on Prospect Road and Whitworth Road are currently scheduled to take place on the nights of Monday 3rd, Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th March, between 7:30pm and 6:00am each night, under a traffic light switch off and a stop/go system at the junction of Prospect Road, Whitworth Road and Phibsborough Road. Further information will be provided closer to the time.
Bloody Sunday Bridge, Russell Street/Jones’ Road
- Remaining works at this bridge include footpath widening, tactile paving, signage and markings, minor gas main works and road resurfacing to improve road drainage on the bridge. These works will require the closure of one traffic lane and a stop/go system during daytime hours. Works are currently expected to start from Monday 10th March 2025 and further information will be provided in the coming weeks.
Temporary Greenway/Canal Towpath Closure, between Cross Guns Bridge and Binns Bridge
- In order to complete testing of the high voltage electricity ducts installed underneath the canal towpath, it will be necessary to close the greenway on the south side of the canal, between the new footbridge at Lock 3 and the rear of Saint Ignatius Road (at the former Spain’s Warehouse). This closure will be in operation from Monday 17th to Friday 21st February inclusive. Signage warning of this closure will be erected on the towpath in advance of the closure.
- The new footbridge, the entire northern towpath and the southern towpath to the west of the footbridge will remain open at all times.
- Cyclists are requested to dismount and walk the northern towpath between the footbridge and Binns Bridge during this closure period.
- Once testing is complete, a temporary reinstatement of the greenway surface will be carried out. A further towpath closure will be required (likely to be for one day) in March to carry out a permanent surface reinstatement. This will coincide with the resurfacing of the remainder of the greenway to Binns Bridge.
The remainder of the greenway between Cross Guns Bridge and Binns Bridge is expected to be opened to the public in late March 2025, shortly after the Binns Bridge toucan crossing is switched on. Further information will be provided in the coming weeks.
Other off-street works are ongoing and substantial completion of the entire greenway between North Strand and Phibsborough is currently expected to occur in Q3 of 2025. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by these works.
Royal Canal Greenway Phase 3 – Planned Roadworks for 2025 – 3rd January 2025
Following a break to facilitate Operation Open City for the month of December, outstanding on-street roadworks for the project are due to resume as follows:
Cross Guns Bridge, Phibsborough Road/Prospect Road/Whitworth Road
- Works are substantially complete at this bridge, with the exception of some minor footpath and roadway snags. The footpath snags will be completed during daytime hours. However, the roadway snags will have to be completed at night under a traffic light switch off and a stop/go system. These works are currently expected to occur in February 2025 and further information will be provided in the coming weeks.
Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower/Whitworth Road/Drumcondra Road Lower
- Footpath works on Drumcondra Road Lower at the Whitworth Road junction are scheduled to resume on Monday 6th January 2025 to facilitate a new electricity connection to the traffic signal controller. Once the connection is made, the footpath at this location will be repaved.
- Kerb modifications are required at the central median on Dorset Street Lower before the new toucan crossing can be commissioned (i.e. brought into use). These works are currently expected to occur in late January/early February 2025 and may require the occupation of two traffic lanes for a period of approximately one week. Night works to complete road resurfacing at this location are expected to take place around this time also, under a traffic light switch off and a stop/go system.
- The toucan crossing is currently expected to be commissioned in late February/early March 2025, with the remainder of the greenway between Cross Guns Bridge and Binns Bridge expected to be opened to the public in March 2025. Further information will be provided in the coming weeks.
Works are currently expected to occur in March/April 2025 and further information will be provided in the coming weeks.
Clarke’s Bridge, Summerhill Parade/Ballybough Road
- Roadworks are scheduled to resume on Monday 20th January 2025 and traffic will again be reduced to one lane in each direction at this bridge in order to complete all works in the footpaths (e.g. traffic signal poles, chambers, kerbs, footpath resurfacing). Roadway resurfacing, road marking, manhole cover resetting and traffic loop cutting works will be completed at night under a traffic light switch off and a stop/go system; this is expected to occur in late February 2025. These works are currently expected to be completed in March 2025.
Off-street works are ongoing and substantial completion of the entire greenway between North Strand and Phibsborough is currently expected to occur in Q3 of 2025. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by these works.
Roadworks Update – 8th November 2024
Clarke’s Bridge, Summerhill Parade/Ballybough Road
Due to the presence of uncharted underground pipes at Clarke’s Bridge, progress on installing the ducting across Summerhill Parade has been slowed. Whilst these unforeseen obstructions have now been bypassed, the delays encountered mean that it will be necessary to carry out further night works at Clarke’s Bridge on the nights of Monday 11th, Tuesday 12th, Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th November.
As before, works will start from 7:30pm each evening and be completed before 6:00am the following morning, with works finishing sooner if progress is good. On each of the affected nights, traffic will be reduced to one lane at Clarke’s Bridge and a stop/go system will be in place. Noisy works, such as breaking the road surface, will be completed by 11:00pm each night and the works contractor will carry out a further letter drop in the local area in advance. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused to local residents, businesses and the public by these works.

Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by these works.
Roadworks Update – 16th October 2024
Clarke’s Bridge, Summerhill Parade/Ballybough Road
Due to unavailability of the specialist crew required to reposition the pedestrian crossing signals on Clarke’s Bridge, it was not possible to commence roadworks on Summerhill Parade on Monday 14th October as previously advised. This crew will now be carrying out this work on the evening of Wednesday 16th October, from 7:30pm to 11pm. Roadworks will commence on Thursday 17th October and run to the end of November 2024, with the main focus on completing all works in the carriageway (e.g. road crossings, resurfacing, road markings). Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction at Clarke’s Bridge for the entire period.
A series of night works to dig trenches across the road for all of the project’s underground utilities are expected to commence from Tuesday 29th October and are expected to take about eight nights (spread across two weeks) to complete. On each of the affected nights, traffic will be reduced to one lane at Clarke’s Bridge and a stop/go system will be in place. Further details will be provided in the coming days.
On-street works will be suspended during Operation Open City and all traffic lanes will be reopened for the whole of December 2024. In early January 2025, traffic will again be reduced to one lane in each direction at Clarke’s Bridge in order to complete all works in the footpaths (e.g. traffic signal poles, chambers, kerbs, footpath resurfacing). These works are currently expected to be completed in February 2025.
Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower
Resurfacing on Binns Bridge is now complete. However, a further traffic light switch off and stop/go system will take place at Binns Bridge on the night of Monday 21st/Tuesday 22nd October, between 7:30pm and 6:00am to lay traffic detection loops in the road surface and to level up manhole covers in the newly resurfaced area. Anyone intending to travel through Binns Bridge during these works is advised to use an alternative route if possible, particularly if travelling to Dublin Airport.
Cross Guns Bridge, Phibsborough Road
On the night of Monday 21st/Tuesday 22nd October, the crew that will be working on Binns Bridge will also carry out some short-duration works at Cross Guns Bridge in order to repair some minor defects in the carriageway. The traffic signals will remain in operation throughout these works and minimal impact is expected on traffic flows.
Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by these works.
Roadworks Update at Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower – 11th October 2024
Work on extending the Dorset Street Lower median was substantially completed on 10th October and the two central traffic lanes on Binns Bridge have now been reopened.
The second phase of road resurfacing and road marking on Binns Bridge has been confirmed for the night of Monday 14th/Tuesday 15th October, between 7:30pm and 6:00am. As per previous night works, a traffic light switch off and stop/go system will be in place on that night, with traffic reduced to one lane in each direction. A similar stop/go system will take place on the night of Monday 21st/Tuesday 22nd October (also between 7:30pm and 6:00am) to lay traffic detection loops in the road surface and to level up manhole covers in the newly resurfaced area. Anyone intending to travel through Binns Bridge during these works is advised to use an alternative route if possible, particularly if travelling to Dublin Airport. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by these works.
Roadworks Update at Clarke’s Bridge, Summerhill Parade/Ballybough Road – 11th October 2024
Further to the previous update on 3rd October, commencement of roadworks on Summerhill Parade at Clarke’s Bridge has been postponed until Monday 14th October due to the work crew being delayed at Binns Bridge and the large crowds expected for the Leinster vs. Munster rugby match in Croke Park on Saturday 12th October. Night works for the road crossings will also be postponed; their revised commencement date will be provided in the coming days.
Roadworks Update at Clarke’s Bridge, Summerhill Parade/Ballybough Road – 3rd October 2024
Following the ending of the traffic diversion for the Clontarf to City Centre project, works for the new toucan crossing and associated infrastructure at Clarke’s Bridge, Summerhill Parade are scheduled to commence on Wednesday 9th October. From that date until the commencement of Operation Open City (expected to be at the end of November), the road will be reduced to one traffic lane in each direction at the bridge and canal towpath. Pedestrians will be diverted onto the nearside traffic lanes in order to facilitate digging in the footpaths on both sides of the road.
From Monday 21st October, night works to lay a total of seventeen ducts across the road are scheduled to commence. Traffic light switch offs will be required at the Clarke’s Bridge pedestrian crossing and a stop/go shuttle system will be put in place, as the road will be reduced to one traffic lane. It is anticipated by the works contractor that it will take eight night shifts, between 7:30pm and 06:00am, to bring all seventeen ducts across the road whilst avoiding clashes with existing utilities. The road crossings are expected to be complete by Friday 1st/Saturday 2nd November. Letter drops will be carried out locally in advance by the contractor.
The seventeen ducts consist of the following:
- Five high voltage electricity ducts.
- Two DCC fibre ducts.
- Two CCTV ducts.
- Two ducts for Waterways Ireland.
- Six traffic ducts for the toucan crossing.
The high voltage electricity ducts will be installed first, as they are the largest and least flexible of the ducts. Further information will be provided as the works progress.
Roadworks Update at Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower – 3rd October 2024
Further to the update on 17th September last, the first phase of road resurfacing and the laying of ducting across Whitworth Road are now complete.
On the morning of Friday 27th September, the traffic signals at the Dorset Street Lower/Drumcondra Road Lower/Whitworth Road/Whitworth Place junction developed a fault, which took a number of hours to rectify. Dublin City Council acknowledges and apologises for the delay and disruption that this fault caused to all affected road users.
Work on extending the Dorset Street Lower median is ongoing and is scheduled for completion on Friday 11th October, whereupon the two central traffic lanes on Binns Bridge will be reopened.
The second phase of road resurfacing is provisionally scheduled for the night of Tuesday 15th/Wednesday 16th October, between 7:30pm and 6:00am; this will be confirmed within the next week. As per previous night works, a traffic light switch off and stop/go system will be in place on that night, with traffic reduced to one lane in each direction. Anyone intending to travel through Binns Bridge during these works is advised to use an alternative route if possible.
Roadworks Update at Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower – 25th September 2024
Due to the laying of traffic signal ducting across the mouth of Whitworth Road over the next two nights, Dublin Bus are diverting outbound bus route nos. 40, 40B and 40D via Broadstone and Phibsborough between 8pm and 5am each night. Further information at https://www.dublinbus.ie/news/diversion-on-routes-40,-40b-and-40d
Bus Éireann routes 103, 109X and NX outbound will also be affected between 7:30pm and 5am each night, with stop nos. 1174 (Mountjoy Square), 15 (Innisfallen Parade) and 834 (Binns Bridge) not being served during the roadworks times. Further information at Service Updates (buseireann.ie)
Inbound services on these routes will still travel via Whitworth Road, but may experience delays due to the stop/go system that will be in place at Binns Bridge during these times. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by these works.

Royal Canal Greenway Phase 3 – Project Update – 19th September 2024
Charleville Mall
As part of the Royal Canal Greenway (RCG) project works significant structural defects were recently identified along the canal quay wall between Clarke’s Bridge (Summerhill Parade) and Lock 1 (adjacent Charleville Mall). On safety grounds the installation of new service ducting along the canal towpath have been placed on hold until canal wall stabilisation works are completed.
Stabilisation works comprise the installation of piles along the rear of the canal quay wall, thereby removing any lateral pressure from the wall. The quay wall will also be repaired where necessary and repointed in its entirety. To facilitate the ongoing piling works it will be necessary to remove one of the existing trees near the entrance to St Vincent’s primary school. See below for tree location.
The RCG project team have liaised with DCC’s Parks dept. who are in agreement that the tree shall be removed provided that the tree is replaced with a similar type of tree. Our main contractor, Jons CE, are in the process of procuring a suitably qualified sub-contractor to fell the tree and remove the root structure. These works are scheduled to take place next week.
The replacement tree will be planted next year when all outstanding landscaping works along Charleville Mall are due to be completed.

Roadworks Update at Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower – 17th September 2024
Almost all of the underground infrastructure for the toucan crossing beneath the roadway and the inbound side footpath has now been installed. Underground infrastructure works to the outbound side footpath are ongoing and are expected to be substantially complete by Friday 20th September. The directional drilling of the high voltage electricity ducting underneath Dorset Street Lower was successfully completed on Thursday 12th September.
In order to progress the remainder of the works at this location, for the four nights from Monday 23rd to Thursday 26th September inclusive, between 7:00pm and 6:00am the following morning, there will be a traffic light switch off at Binns Bridge and a stop/go system will be in place. This is in order to re-lay the road surface in four of the six traffic lanes and to lay ducting across the mouth of the junction with Whitworth Road. This will facilitate the connection of the new toucan crossing to the existing traffic signal controller at the junction of Whitworth Road and Drumcondra Road Lower.
These night works are planned to proceed as follows:
- From 7:00pm Monday 23rd to 6:00am Tuesday 24th September – Stop/go system to facilitate planing and resurfacing of inbound bus lane and middle traffic lane. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on all approaches.
- From 7:00pm Tuesday 24th to 6:00am Wednesday 25th September – Stop/go system to facilitate planing and resurfacing of outbound bus lane and middle traffic lane. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on all approaches.
- From 7:00pm Wednesday 25th to 6:00am Thursday 26th September – Stop/go system to facilitate laying of ducting across southern half of Whitworth Road. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on all approaches except Whitworth Road, which will be reduced to one lane only.
- From 7:00pm Thursday 26th to 6:00am Friday 27th September – Stop/go system to facilitate laying of ducting across northern half of Whitworth Road. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on all approaches except Whitworth Road, which will be reduced to one lane only.
From then on, the works programme at Binns Bridge is expected to be as follows (which may be subject to change):
- Wednesday 25th September to Tuesday 8th October (entire period): Reinstate and extend central median on Dorset Street Lower. Traffic reduced to two lanes in each direction.
- Wednesday 9th October (evening/night): Stop/go system to facilitate planing and resurfacing of the traffic lanes closest to the median in both directions. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
- Thursday 10th to Monday 14th October: Reset manhole covers, install traffic loops and lay road markings. Details to be confirmed at a later date.
- From Monday 14th October: Upgrade traffic signal and fibre cabinets at the Whitworth Road/Drumcondra Road Lower junction; commissioning of new toucan crossing. Details to be confirmed at a later date.
During these times, road users should expect to encounter delays, particularly those who are travelling to Dublin Airport. The works contractor will be carrying out letter drops locally in advance of all out-of-hours works and noisy works will be kept to a minimum after 11:00pm. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by these works.
Roadworks Update at Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower – 30th August 2024
Footpath works for the toucan crossing on the inbound side of Binns Bridge are now substantially complete and all traffic lanes have been reopened for the weekend. The next phase of construction will involve similar work on the outbound footpath; this will require the closure of part of the outbound bus lane to accommodate diverted pedestrians. Due to additional pedestrian and traffic volumes in the area related to the Coldplay concerts in Croke Park, these works will now commence on Tuesday 3rd September and are expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.
Roadworks Update at Cross Guns Bridge, Phibsborough – 19th August 2024
In order to complete some of the outstanding snag items at the new toucan crossing, it will be necessary to temporarily close the footpath on the outbound (west) side of Phibsborough Road and Prospect Road at Cross Guns Bridge, between 10am and 4pm on both Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st August. During this period, the outbound bus lane will be closed to traffic in order to accommodate pedestrians. Vehicular access to properties in the affected area will be maintained at all times.
Commissioning of this toucan crossing is anticipated to take place in September 2024, as the city council’s traffic signal contractor is currently prioritising projects such as the City Centre Transport Plan and the Clontarf to City Centre Project.
Works Update at Charleville Mall, North Strand – 19th August 2024
Following the recent temporary diversion of the medium pressure gas main on the canal towpath between Clarke’s Bridge and Charleville Mall Library, the piling works required to stabilise the canal quay wall are scheduled to start on Thursday 22nd August. These works are expected to take up to three months to complete. Following completion of piling, the water level in the canal will be lowered to facilitate repair and repointing of the quay wall, which is also expected to take up to three months. New gas mains and electricity and communications ducts will be laid along this stretch of towpath whilst the quay wall is being repaired.
Mitigation measures such as additional fencing, catch netting and acoustic barriers are being deployed to reduce the impact of the piling works on the library, Saint Vincent’s School and adjacent residential properties. The works contractor has also carried out an advance letter drop in the areas closest to the site. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by these works.
Roadworks Update at Bloody Sunday Bridge, Russell Street – 9th August 2024
The roadworks that were scheduled on the outbound side of Russell Street at Bloody Sunday Bridge, from Wednesday 7th to Friday 9th August inclusive, have been postponed and will now take place from Tuesday 13th to Thursday 15th August instead. During this period, Russell Street will be reduced to one lane during normal working hours and stop/go boards will be used to manage traffic and pedestrian flows. The road will be fully reopened outside of working hours each day. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by these works.
Roadworks Update at Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower – 2nd August 2024
Works are scheduled to resume at Binns Bridge after the August Bank Holiday. Between 7:30pm and 6:00am on both Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th August, the middle portion of Dorset Street Lower will be closed to traffic for two nights in order to join up the fourteen service ducts that were laid on both sides of the road. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction during these works, but all lanes will reopen during the daytime. The traffic signals at Binns Bridge will remain in operation throughout these works.
From Thursday 8th August, the inbound bus lane on Binns Bridge will be closed to accommodate pedestrians while the toucan crossing and all service duct access chambers are being constructed in the inbound footpath. These works are expected to take approximately three weeks to complete, i.e. until the end of August.

Gas main works are scheduled on the canal towpath at both Clarke’s Bridge and Charleville Mall from Wednesday 7th to Friday 9th August inclusive. During these works, it is now anticipated that the footpath on the inbound side of Clarke’s Bridge will only be occupied in exceptional circumstances. Therefore, this footpath will most likely remain open throughout these works.
Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by these works.
Reopening Update for Linear Park between Cross Guns Bridge and Binns Bridge – 17th July 2024
Dublin City Council is pleased to announce that the majority of the linear park along the Royal Canal, between Cross Guns Bridge and Binns Bridge, will reopen to the public from 4pm on Friday 19th July 2024.
This first phase of the reopening comprises the entire northern towpath (alongside the railway line), the new pedestrian and cycle bridge at Lock 3 and the southern towpath between Glengarriff Parade and the former Spain’s warehouse (to the rear of Saint Ignatius Road). The remainder of the linear park, i.e. the southern towpath between the former Spain’s warehouse and Binns Bridge, will reopen to the public after the Dorset Street Lower toucan crossing at Binns Bridge is completed. The works contractor needs this space to store plant and materials for the roadworks at Binns Bridge, which are currently expected to be completed in October/November 2024. In addition, this space is required for tunnelling the high voltage electricity ducts underneath Dorset Street Lower. The drawing below titled “RCGP3 – Partial Opening Section 01.pdf” highlights the areas that are being reopened.
Snags and Additional Works:
Like all construction projects, there will be minor elements of construction work that need to be completed or modified after the park has reopened. These are commonly known as snags. For the remainder of 2024 (and possibly beyond), there will be occasional minor construction activity within the linear park, but public access will be maintained in all but the most exceptional of circumstances. In the unlikely event that such works require the temporary blocking of a towpath, notification will be given in advance and an alternative route advised.
Roadworks Update at Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower – 12th July 2024
To date, fourteen service ducts have been installed quarter way across the road on both sides and the essential gas main works are now complete on the inbound side. Six ducts have also been laid in the outbound footpath and parts of this footpath have been permanently reinstated.
Between 7:30pm on Wednesday 17th July and 6:00am on Thursday 18th July, there will be a traffic light switch off at Binns Bridge and a stop/go system will be in place in order to remove all traffic management from the road and to redraw the road markings. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction during these works. This is in order to return the bridge to its original layout of three traffic lanes in each direction. The bridge will remain like this for the duration of the construction holiday period, i.e. until Tuesday 6th August.
From then on, the works programme at Binns Bridge is expected to be as follows (which may be subject to change):
- Tuesday 6th to Thursday 8th August (evenings/nights): Stop/go system each night to join up the fourteen service ducts in the middle of Dorset Street Lower. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
- Friday 9th to Friday 30th August (entire period): Construct toucan crossing and related chambers in footpath, inbound side. One inbound (bus) lane closed to accommodate pedestrians.
- Monday 2nd to Friday 13th September (entire period): Construct toucan crossing and related chambers in footpath, outbound side. One outbound lane closed to accommodate pedestrians.
- Monday 16th to Friday 20th September (evenings/nights): Stop/go system each night to resurface road (stage 1 of 2). Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
- Monday 23rd September to Friday 4th October (entire period): Reinstate and extend central median on Dorset Street Lower. Traffic reduced to two lanes in each direction.
- Monday 7th to Friday 11th October (evenings/nights): Stop/go system each night to complete road resurfacing (stage 2 of 2), reset manhole covers, install traffic loops and lay road markings. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
- Monday 14th October to Friday 1st November (to be confirmed): Lay ducts across the mouth of Whitworth Road and replace traffic signal and fibre cabinets on Drumcondra Road Lower. Details to be confirmed at a later date.
- Monday 4th to Friday 8th November (to be confirmed): Commissioning of new toucan crossing. Details to be confirmed at a later date.
During these times, road users should expect to encounter delays, particularly those who are travelling to Dublin Airport. The works contractor will carry out letter drops locally in advance of all out-of-hours works and noisy works will be kept to a minimum after 11:00pm. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by these works.
Roadworks Update at Clarke’s Bridge, Summerhill Parade – 12th July 2024
Due to circumstances beyond our control, the footpath closure on the inbound side of Clarke’s Bridge that was scheduled from Wednesday 10th July has been postponed. Gas Networks Ireland now expect to carry out these works after the August Bank Holiday.
Works between Clarke’s Bridge and Charleville Mall Library
In order to facilitate the piling works required to stabilise the canal quay wall between Clarke’s Bridge and Charleville Mall Library, it will be necessary for Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) to temporarily divert the medium pressure gas main in the canal towpath. Preparatory works for the temporary gas main bypass are now underway.
To allow GNI’s contractor sufficient working room to connect the temporary bypass to the existing gas main at Clarke’s Bridge, it will be necessary to close the south-eastern (inbound side) footpath on Summerhill Parade, between Clarke’s Bridge and the Bridgewater Hall apartment complex. This closure will be implemented from Wednesday 10th July, for a period of up to one week, between the hours of 10am and 6pm each weekday. Some on-street parking spaces will be affected between these hours, as pedestrians will be diverted into the parking area. The pedestrian crossing on Clarke’s Bridge will remain in operation throughout. All traffic management infrastructure will be removed each evening and both inbound traffic lanes will be kept clear during clearway hours, i.e. between 7am and 10am each weekday. Please see attached Traffic Management Plan.
Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by these works.
Reopening Update for Linear Park between Cross Guns Bridge and Binns Bridge – 8th July 2024
Regrettably, since the reopening update on 29th May last, the works contractor has experienced some difficulties with their supply chains and subcontractors that have further delayed the reopening of the linear park. In addition, necessary amendments to Dublin City Council’s public liability insurances are ongoing and have yet to be finalised.
Consequently, the park is now expected to be reopened to the public in two phases as follows:
- Phase 1: The entire northern towpath (alongside the railway line), the new pedestrian and cycle bridge and the southern towpath between Lock 3 and the former Spain’s warehouse (to the rear of Saint Ignatius Road) are currently expected to reopen to the public at the end of July 2024. Until Phase 2 is complete, the southern towpath can be accessed by using the laneway between house nos. 23 and 24 Saint Ignatius Road.
- Phase 2: The remainder, i.e. the southern towpath between the former Spain’s warehouse and Binns Bridge, will reopen to the public after the Dorset Street Lower toucan crossing at Binns Bridge is completed. This is currently expected to be in October 2024. The works contractor needs this space to store plant and materials during construction of the toucan crossing.
Precise dates for the opening of each phase of the linear park will be notified in advance as they become clearer. Dublin City Council apologises for this further delay.
Traffic management update regarding ongoing road works on Dorset St at Binns Bridge
Further to our previous update on 29th May 2024 regarding construction works on Dorset St at Binns Bridge to install new ducting across Dorset St and a new Toucan signalised crossing, works commenced on Tuesday 4th June and are currently ongoing on a 7-day a week basis. Temporary traffic management is currently in place where the inbound and outbound traffic lanes on Dorset Street have been reduced from 3 lanes to 2 lanes for the duration of the works, which is anticipated to be between 15 weeks and 20 weeks, the exact duration of which will depend on what extant underground services / obstructions our Contractor encounters during the course of the works.
On Thursday 20th June our Contractor is scheduled to make alterations to the current temporary traffic management arrangements on Dorset St. From 7:30pm our Contractor will alter the traffic management on Dorset St to occupy the two inbound traffic lanes to facilitate necessary gas main diversion works in this area. Two inbound and two outbound traffic lanes will remain in operation to road users. This temporary traffic management arrangement will remain in place for approximately four weeks. Night works to undertake gas main diversions are schedule for four nights commencing 24th June.
Local residents and business owners will be notified by way of a letter drop
Roadworks Update at Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower – 29th May 2024
In order to construct the toucan crossing linking the canal towpaths at Binns Bridge on Dorset Street Lower, it will be necessary to reduce the number of traffic lanes at Binns Bridge over the coming four months. These works commenced on the evening of Monday 20th May and are being carried out in eight stages. Variable message signs giving advance warning of the works are installed at the following locations:
- Junction of Drumcondra Road Lower and Clonliffe Road.
- Outbound side of Binns Bridge.
- Junction of Whitworth Road and Saint Patrick’s Road.
- Junction of Belvidere Road and North Circular Road.
Stage 1 (preparatory) works were curtailed last week due to the Europa League Final in Lansdowne Road and will be completed this week instead. The works contractor also attempted to commence Stage 2 (outbound side ducting) works on Friday 24th May, but as the traffic management layout resulted in significant tailbacks towards the city centre, the contractor decided to reopen all traffic lanes and review the layout. These works are now planned to resume on Tuesday 4th June under a revised traffic management layout.
The revised works programme is as follows:
- Stage 1: Remainder of preparatory works (exposing gas main) – evenings/nights from Wednesday 29th May to Thursday 30th May inclusive, between 7:30pm and 6:00am each night. Traffic reduced to one lane in each direction, stop/go system in place.
- Set up Stage 2 traffic management layout – night of Monday 3rd June, between 11:00pm and 4:00am. Traffic reduced to one lane in each direction, stop/go system in place.
- Stage 2: Lay ducting in western footpath and across two outbound traffic lanes – days/evenings from Tuesday 4th June to Monday 17th June inclusive. Traffic reduced to two lanes in each direction.
- Stage 3: Lay ducting in two middle traffic lanes – evenings/nights from Monday 17th June to Friday 21st June inclusive, between 7:30pm and 6:00am each night. Traffic reduced to two lanes in each direction.
- Stage 4: Lay ducting across two inbound traffic lanes, build chambers, install valves on gas main – days/evenings from Saturday 22nd June to Friday 19th July inclusive. Traffic reduced to two lanes in each direction.
All traffic lanes will be reopened between Friday 19th July and Tuesday 6th August for the construction industry holiday period. This period includes the All-Ireland Hurling and Football Finals.
In between each of the stages, the traffic management layout will be changed during the night, typically between 11:00pm and 4:00am. At these times, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and a stop/go system will be in place as the traffic signals at the Dorset Street Lower/Drumcondra Road Lower/Whitworth Road junction will be switched off.
From Tuesday 6th August, works will resume as follows (details to be confirmed closer to the time):
- Stage 5: Reinstate and extend central median, install traffic signal pole base in median (day/evening works). Traffic reduced to two lanes in each direction.
- Stage 6: Install traffic signal pole bases, tactile paving and footpath paving (day/evening works). Lay ducting across the mouth of Whitworth Road to connect the new toucan crossing to the existing traffic signals (evening/night works).
- Stage 7: Road resurfacing and road markings (evening/night works).
- Stage 8: Commissioning the new toucan crossing (evening/night works).
These roadworks are currently expected to be completed in September 2024.
Road users should expect to encounter delays in the area and should consider using alternative routes if possible, particularly if travelling to Dublin Airport. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by these works.
Reopening Update for Linear Park between Cross Guns Bridge and Binns Bridge – 29th May 2024
Construction works are getting close to completion on both towpaths along the linear park between Cross Guns Bridge and Binns Bridge. The project team is acutely aware that local people are keen to see the park reopen as soon as possible. The park will be reopened to the public in two phases as follows:
- Phase 1: The entire northern towpath (alongside the railway line), the new pedestrian and cycle bridge and the southern towpath between Lock 3 and the former Spain’s warehouse (to the rear of Saint Ignatius Road) are currently expected to reopen to the public at the end of June 2024.
This is currently expected to be at the end of September 2024. The works contractor needs this space to store plant and materials during construction of the toucan crossing.
Some minor construction works (e.g. jetty construction) will be taking place for a time after the Phase 1 reopening, as well as snagging works.
Cyclists should note that all of the original towpaths in the linear park (including the northern towpath between the new footbridge and Binns Bridge) are for pedestrians only, as they are too narrow to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists at the same time. Until Phase 2 is reopened, cyclists can access Dorset Street Lower via Saint Ignatius Road, Innisfallen Parade or North Circular Road.
Precise dates for the opening of each phase of the linear park will be notified in advance as they become clearer.
Royal Canal Greenway Phase 3 – Roadworks Update at Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower – 13th May 2024

Roadworks Update at Cross Guns Bridge – 28th March 2024
The road resurfacing works at Cross Guns Bridge, Phibsborough have now been completed. However, there will be a slight change to the original programme for the remaining on-road works, meaning the night time closures will run into the first week of April as follows:
Thursday 28th March – Raising of ironworks (such as manhole and valve covers) to match the new surface level and laying of permanent road markings. Some surfacing works along the canal towpath, between Lock 3 and Cross Guns Bridge, are also planned.
Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd April – Installation of traffic detection loops in the road surface throughout the junction.
As before, these works will take place on each of these days between 7:30pm and 4:00am the following morning. During these times, the traffic signals at Cross Guns Bridge will be switched off and a stop-go system will be in operation. Upcoming Footpath Works at Bloody Sunday Bridge- 22/03/2024
“In order to progress the on-street roadworks for the Royal Canal Greenway Phase 3 project at Bloody Sunday Bridge, it will be necessary to close the inbound (eastern) footpath and traffic lane on the bridge from Monday 25th March to Friday 29th March inclusive. This is to facilitate new connections to the local electricity network.
During this period, temporary traffic signals and pedestrian crossings will be established to manage traffic flow through the outbound traffic lane and to allow pedestrians to access the western footpath. There will not be enough space available to allow pedestrians past the works location without crossing the road.
A letter drop to inform local residents and businesses has already taken place. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by these works.
Roadworks at Cross Guns Bridge, Phibsborough, 25th-28th March 2024
The on-street roadworks for the Royal Canal Greenway Phase 3 project at Cross Guns Bridge in Phibsborough are now nearing completion. One of the remaining tasks is to resurface the roadway on the bridge and at the junction of Phibsborough Road, Prospect Road and Whitworth Road. As this work will be disruptive, it is scheduled to be undertaken over four evenings/nights, from Monday 25th to Thursday 28th March 2024 inclusive, between 7:30pm and 4:00am the following morning. During these times, the traffic signals at Cross Guns Bridge will be switched off and a stop-go system will be in operation, as the road will be reduced to one lane at the works location.
The resurfacing works will be carried out in three stages and will include the introduction of a raised table surface at the junction. The fourth stage involves road marking and the installation of traffic detection loops in the road surface.
Stage 1: Monday 25th March – Road resurfacing works on the inbound lanes of Prospect Road and the eastbound lane of Whitworth Road, i.e. outside the Bernard Shaw pub. Please see attached drawing ‘Surfacing Stage 1.pdf’.
Stage 2: Tuesday 26th March – Road resurfacing works on the inbound lanes of Cross Guns Bridge and the westbound lane of Whitworth Road. Please see attached drawings ‘Surfacing Stage 2 Sheet 1.pdf’ and ‘Surfacing Stage 2 Sheet 2.pdf’.
Please also note that for a brief time whilst the new surface is being laid at the junction of Phibsborough Road and Royal Canal Bank/Eglinton Terrace, it will not be possible for vehicles to exit from Royal Canal Bank/Eglinton Terrace, as the junction is too narrow. However, emergency access will be facilitated if necessary.
Stage 3: Wednesday 27th March – Road resurfacing works on the outbound lanes of Cross Guns Bridge and Prospect Road, i.e. outside Des Kelly’s. Please see attached drawings ‘Surfacing Stage 3 Sheet 1.pdf’ and ‘Surfacing Stage 3 Sheet 2.pdf’.
Stage 4: Thursday 28th March – Laying of road markings and installation of traffic detection loops in the road surface throughout the junction.
Noisy works, such as cutting and planing off the existing road surface, are to be completed by 11:00pm each night.
In the event that the works are subjected to unforeseen delay (e.g. bad weather), a fifth night (from 7:30pm on Friday 29th March to 4:00am on Saturday 30th March) may be required to complete the resurfacing works. Further notice will be provided in advance if a fifth night is needed here.
Road users are encouraged to use alternative routes where feasible, as delays are expected during these works. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience caused.
Proposed tree removal between Lock 2 and Lock 3 - 27/02/2024
In accordance with the original consultant arborist’s tree report, the project site arborist has undertaken an assessment of a number of existing trees along the south bank of the Royal Canal between Binns Bridge (Lock 2) and Lock 3. The outcome of his assessment is as follows:
- The immediate removal of one tree on the south side of the canal near Lock 3.
- It has recently come to light there are significantly more existing underground services along the south side canal towpath in the area adjacent lock 2 than had previously been thought. Also in this area are two large willow trees that have caused structural damage to the lock 2 chamber wall. As such, the proposed new underground services will have to be installed in the area occupied by the tree roots. The service trench backfill material is not compatible with the survival of the tree roots and risks destabilisating the tree. In addition, it is Waterways Ireland’s intention to remove both trees to prevent any further damage to the Lock chamber wall.
Every attempt will be made to ensure new tress are planted at some suitable location along the scheme to replace those felled.

Royal Canal Greenway Phase 3 – Upcoming Roadworks
Cross Guns Bridge - Road Crossing Works - 6th and 7th February 2024
As part of the Royal Canal Greenway Phase 3 Project works, Jons Civil Engineering will be carrying out night works at Cross Guns Bridge, Phibsborough Road, on Tuesday 6th & Wednesday 7th February. These necessary works entail the installation of 12 no. ducts across the full width of Phibsborough Road at Cross Guns Bridge. These ducts are required for the provision of the following services:
- A new Toucan signalised road crossing at Cross Guns Bridge (pedestrians & cyclists)
- New comms ducting for waterways Ireland
- New ducting to upgrade extant traffic signal infrastructure at Whitworth Road / Prospect Road / Phibsborough Rd junction
- New DCC fibre and DCC CCTV ducting
Traffic management will be set up at approximately 7:30pm on Tuesday 6th February. This will necessitate the temporary closure of 3 traffic lanes at any one time, leaving only one traffic lane in operation for the duration of the work shift (7:30pm to 4am). All excessively noisy works will be completed before 11pm. Traffic lights at Whitworth Road / Prospect Road junction will be temporarily switched off and a stop / go shuttle system (manually controlled by 7 no. traffic marshals) will be in place for the duration of the shift. Works will finish at 4am each night and all traffic lanes will be fully reopened to traffic.
Advance notification will be given to all local businesses and residential dwellings by means of a letter drop and variable message sign units located at Cross Guns Bridge.
The works will be carried out over two nights and while disruption to traffic is unavoidable every effort will be made to ensure disruption is kept to an absolute minimum.
Cross Guns Bridge (Phibsborough Road/Prospect Road/Whitworth Road Junction)
On Saturday 13th January, the traffic signals at this junction will be temporarily switched off in order to transfer the existing traffic signal poles into moveable blocks. A stop/go system will be in place while the transfer takes place and both Phibsborough Road and Prospect Road will be reduced from four lanes to two at the junction, with both the inbound and outbound bus lanes closed to traffic.
When the transfer is complete, all lanes will reopen to traffic except the inbound (east side) bus lane, which will remain closed to traffic for the following six weeks. Pedestrians will be diverted into this bus lane, with works commencing on the inbound footpath on Monday 15th January. In late February, works will then swap to the opposite side of the road, with the outbound (west side) bus lane closed to traffic for a further six weeks.
Throughout the works period, a number of evening/night time or weekend traffic signal switch-offs and stop/go systems will be required in order to lay utilities across the roadway and to resurface the carriageway. These works are expected to cause considerable disruption, as traffic will be reduced to one lane at the works location. The first of these switch-offs is provisionally scheduled for late January; more precise dates, times and traffic management plans will be confirmed closer to the dates in question.
Works at Cross Guns Bridge are expected to be substantially complete in April 2024.
Bloody Sunday Bridge (Russell Street/Jones’ Road Junction)
Subject to the issue of a road closure order, on Wednesday 24th January the bridge will be closed to traffic in both directions until Friday 9th February inclusive. This is in order to dig a single trench across the full width of the road, to ensure that all underground utilities can be laid with adequate spacing between them. Pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained throughout this period, especially on Croke Park match days.
During the road closure period, there will be two diversion routes for traffic as follows:
- Eastern Diversion: North Circular Road ↔ Summerhill Parade ↔ Ballybough Road ↔ Clonliffe Road
- Western Diversion: North Circular Road ↔ Belvidere Road ↔ Dorset Street Lower ↔ Drumcondra Road Lower ↔ Clonliffe Road
Both routes can be used in either direction.
As soon as the road closure period ends, one traffic lane on the bridge will reopen for the following four weeks, with traffic flow controlled by temporary traffic signals on either side of the bridge. Further information on this arrangement will be confirmed closer to the time.
Works at Bloody Sunday Bridge are expected to be substantially complete in March 2024.
Please see attached traffic management plans for your information. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience and disruption that may be caused as a result of these works.
