Historical background

This case study house on Lennox Street dates from the early development of the street in the 19th century. A section of the street was part of the Kingsland Estate which contained a park called the Portobello Gardens at the west end of the street, as well as a city basin fed from the canal. The development of the west end of Lennox Street was later facilitated by the infilling of The Portobello Basin in 1883.

Statement of heritage value of the existing house

The house is significant as it forms part of an intact late-Georgian terrace/streetscape illustrating the earlier development phase of the Portobello area which was continued to be developed into the latter half of the 19th century. The terrace enhances this historic streetscape and illustrates the evoluation of the Georgian style at the time from larger townhouses to small middle-class dwellings to cater for the growing population of the Portobello area.

The house and the majority of its neighbours are protected structures and its original plan form, room proportions, and decorative architectural details are largely intact. The house is of architectural and artistic interest.
