Background to the renovation works

Reason for Works

The owners of the building face a substantial annual heating bill and measures to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs were considered (note the works in this case study have not yet been carried out and therefore the analysis is theoretical).

Design approach

Given the significance of the structure, the appropriate conservation of the house was central to the owner’s brief. There was a desire to carry out thermal comfort improvements that were appropriate and sensitive to this historically significant house. Thermal upgrading of walls and windows to the principal rooms was ruled out given the high value of the interior features. Essentially, this approach focused on a heating system upgrade and attic insulation – typically the areas of highest energy saving and lowest heritage impact on historic buildings.
