Description of completed upgrade project and heritage impact:

Heritage Impact |
---|---|---|
Insulation of timber floors |
The existing ground floor suspended timber floor was insulated with 175mm compressed fibre insulation in netting installed from above by temporary removal of the original floorboards as part of a general reconditioning of the floor. |
None All original fabric was retained and floorboards were carefully removed |
Insulation of solid floors |
The solid ground floors to the rear returns were replaced and insulated with 100mm of rigid PIR board and perimeter edge insulation |
Low Existing solid floors were not significant |
Wall insulation |
The rear return was insulated with 50mm calcium silicate board where no period wall features existed. |
Low No wall or window features existed in the return |
Attic Insulation |
The roof attic spaces were insulated with 300mm fibre insulation to current standards. |
None All original roof fabric was retained |
Sash window draughtproofing & repair |
The existing sash windows were repaired and draughtproofed with a proprietary brush system. (Two of the original sets of shutter and shutter surrounds were missing and were fabricated to the original detail and reinstated.) |
Low Windows were repaired and draughtproofed in situ |
New casement windows |
New timber framed 18mm double-glazed windows to replace casement units to rear returns were installed. |
Low Opes located to the rear return had been previously modified and no original window joinery existed |
Heating system replacement |
A seven-zone individual room gas-fired heating system was installed to allow programmable partial heating patterns to suit the owner’s occupancy of the house. |
Low Existing service routes were used insofar as possible |
Draughtproofing chimneys |
The existing fireplaces were refurbished as part of the works. Three of the four existing fireplaces not intended for use had register plates inserted to the base of the chimneys to eliminate draughts. Chimney pots were capped while allowing ventilation to the flues. |
None All fireplaces retained. Register plates are completely reversible |
Rendering |
The rear elevation of the houses was re-rendered with hydraulic lime render to ensure the solid walls could breathe. |
Low The lime rendering replaced modern cement render |
It is noted that the house is a protected structure and the works required planning permission. See Chapter 9 for more on the type of retrofit measures carried out here [link to follow].
