Suir Road Davitt Road Drawings
- Improve junction safety and efficiency of operation
- Provide safe coherent routing through the junction for pedestrians and cyclists
- Reduce number of collisions and near misses with trams.
- Reduction from five arm to four arm junction by closure of Slievenamon slip road
- Shorten the vehicle journey through the junction for traffic
- Introduction of cycle signals and cycle protection islands
- Bus gate limiting vehicles from Slievenamon Road to Dolphin Road to bus only
- Increase green area and provide landscaping to large green areas.
- Traffic other than buses and bicycles may access Dolphin Road via Galtymore road or Mourne Road when the bus gate is operable
- Slievenamon Road north of Galtymore Road will be local access only for general traffic coming from the south. All traffic will be able to access Slievenamon Road from the north from Dolphin Road.
A number of design options were considered for the junction upgrade – the bus gate provided the biggest reduction in delays for buses using the junction. Allowing general traffic to use this exit onto Dolphin Road would have led to significant delays for buses through the junction.
- The overall scheme is being delivered on a phased basis
- Interim works have been installed from South Circular Road (at Rialto Bridge) to Marrowbone Lane in the initial phase of works
- Suir Road junction upgrade is required to be delivered ahead of the remainder of the scheme as a safety improvement
- The remainder of the Kilmainham to Thomas Street Scheme Route is planned to be delivered as a single phase after the Suir Road junction.
- To provide enhanced cyclist safety as early as possible interim measures were constructed from Marrowbone lane to Rialto Bridge on the South Circular Road.
- Suir Road Junction Upgrade will be progressed ahead of the remainder of the scheme delivery to improve cycle safety and overall junction performance in light of additional cyclist volume generated by the interim scheme.
The project is being progressed as qualifying as traffic calming measures under Section 38 of the Roads Act making it exempt from the planning approval process.
National Transport Authority are the funding authority for this scheme
Current programmed date for beginning construction of the junction upgrade is during the first Quarter of 2025
