North Circular Road Project
The North Circular Road Project is being delivered by the Active Travel Programme Office in Dublin City Council. The National Transport Authority is funding the project.
The primary objective of the North Circular Road project is to provide high-quality segregated cycling facilities. The project extends from Infirmary Road at the junction of Conyngham Road and Parkgate Street to Seville Place at its junction with Guild Street, in North Wall. The total scheme length is approximately five kilometres
The route is identified as a secondary route in the Greater Dublin Area Cycle Network Plan, published by the National Transport Authority in 2013.
The North Circular Road is a regional road and is a key orbital route for city traffic. Advisory cycle lanes are currently in place along much of the route; however. these are not segregated and do not extend through junctions. A need for segregated cycling infrastructure has been identified along this route in order to encourage increased usage of sustainable modes of transport.
Bus Orbital Route
An orbital bus route is proposed to be introduced on North Circular Road as part of the BusConnects project. New bus stops will be required to facilitate this and these will be included in the North Circular Road project.
Scheme Benefits
The North Circular Road project will deliver a variety of benefits for people who walk, wheel, cycle or use public transport along the project's extents. These benefits will be achieved whilst preserving the character of the roadway along key stretches of the route by protecting the mature trees that line the existing carriageway and introducing additional planting, where feasible. These benefits include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Improved priority for pedestrians and cyclists through junction upgrades and segregated cycling infrastructure.
- Improved connectivity with existing and future active travel infrastructure.
- Improved linkage with Safe Routes to School schemes within the vicinity of North Circular Road.
- Reduced transport emissions by encouraging a modal shift to sustainable transport in accordance with the Climate Action Plan 2023.
Public Consultation
Members of the public will be provided with opportunities to comment on the North Circular Road project prior to its delivery. Further information about the commencement of public consultations will be available on the North Circular Road project page in future, or at consultation.dublincity.ie
